Volume 5: March & April 2015

Shomwatala Shivute

Shomwatala Shivute is a born and bred Namibian artist fresh from finishing her studies at the Michaelis School of Fine Arts in South Africa. She has a keen interest in the social issues that happen around her. She tries to use her art as a mode of protesting against these issues and as a tool to create awareness.

She works mainly in the photographic medium, however she does not only use photography but also expresses her self through other art mediums like sculpture, printing etc.

Her last project, Shattered Lives, focused on the high rate of “passion killings” that were happening in Namibia –  “My project was a photography project looking at what one sees from the outside looking into and abusive or troubled relationship that then ends in “Intimate Partner Homicide.””

Shomwatala has shared some of the images from this series with us.
