Volume 3: Nov & Dec 2014

VOL. 3, ISSUE #1: Editorial

Hi there, all you avid ARTWOLFE readers. This is the first issue of Volume 3 and it has been a tough one to complete. Stuck between celebratory hype and controversial criticism we’ve been at a loss as how to navigate the treacherous waters of the Bank Windhoek Triennial. Before compiling this issue we sent out a number of little forms to try and get a wide variety of opinions from the Windhoek masses. These forms were informative but in the end we couldn’t use them, they were
simply too vague. After that we tried to hunt down articles from whoever was interested, this zine is a record of their responses.

In this issue we start with one of the Judge’s reports. We then plunge into a response piece by Robert Namaseb who sums up and reviews this report and the other Judges’ reports that appear in the Catalogue. He asks some tough questions and takes a rather hard but perhaps necessary line. We encourage everyone who is interested to get hold of a catalogue and read the judges reports first hand! If you can’t get hold of a physical copy be sure to email the National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN) they are always helpful and prompt with their replies.

Responding to the many requests from people not in Windhoek to see the works on display, we have printed some images of the winning works, sadly, we do not have space for more. It is our hope that, now that these images are more easily accessible, your opinions and comments will be forthcoming on our WordPress site.

Alpheus Mvula was kind enough to sit down with us for an interview which we have included here too. We also have a note from one of the participants of the Triennial whose opinions and tone reflect the feelings of many Namibian artists, a brief interview with Findano Shikonda and a quick look at various comments and emails that we’ve been receiving over the past few months regarding the Triennial.

With a deep sigh of relief we are moving on and forward, Volume 3, Issue 2 is on its way and will be about some of the major arts organisations in Namibia. Remember, we are now producing a longer version of ARTWOLFE twice month instead of weekly. ALSO – we are now on Twitter and Tumblr so go tweet at us (twitter.com/artwolfezine) and look at our beautiful tumblr site for inspiration and images! (tumblr.com/artwolfezine). Don’t forget to keep us posted on absolutely anything you have to say.
much love,
the ARTWOLFE team
